The main aim was to create an online tool for the choice of colour scales according to map styles.
The theoretical part of this thesis dealt with an analysis of colour scales and existing tools for their creation. Introductory questionnaires were held in the beginning of work to analyse awareness of more than 100 of cartographers, geoinformation specialists and others regarding existing tools and their subjective opinion of two chosen tools.
The aim of practical part was to design quantitative and qualitative colour scales. They were created with the use of DCS® BOOK CMYK Professional Edition chart, Sequential Color Scheme Generator 1.0 and Color Hunter tool. Quantitave scales were then divided according to visual styles and qualitative scale were put in the visual style in the process of their creation. The visual styles were set by a supervisor. An eye-tracking testing with 45 respondents was used to verify created colour scales for digital use and ability to distinguish individual intervals. For printed map creation a suggestion for possible testing of scheme was made.
All the scales are connected with QGIS 2.12.3 and a user can upload the chosen scale to it and use it. A manual in three languages (Czech, English and German) is provided in an online tool. All the scales are available in txt, pdf and xml files.
The data from this work are stored according to the requirement of the Department of geoinformatics at Palacký University. There is also a webpage about this work available on its website.
All the aims of the work were fulfilled, individual steps were consulted and the results were verified. Therefore the output of this work can be directly used (for the choice of colour scales by using an online tool created) or can serve as the basis of further research of colours in cartography.
